Prof. Schilling honoured for small satellite success01.03.2019
Prof. Klaus Schilling, Prof. Ilan Koren, and Prof. Yoav Schechner won the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant, guaranteeing a funding of €14 million to improve cloud data for climate modelling using small satellites.
On 1 March, 2019, a special event was organised by the BayFor at the Katholische Akademie in Munich to honor the researchers (Prof. Schilling, Prof. Koren and Prof. Schechner) behind the German-Israeli project "CloudCT" which won the ERC Synergy Grant. This is an interdisciplinary project which with the help of 10 small satellites will help in the creation of better 3D models of clouds, which in turn will help in better predicting weather patterns and in general help in climate research.
Prof. Dr. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, President of the European Research Council, started off the proceedings with his video message and was followed in person by Judith Gerlach, the Bavarian Minister for Digitalisation, Sanda Simovich, Consul General of the State of Israel in Munich and Maximilian Prugger, Managing Director of MPG and the CEO of the Minerva Stiftung.
Prof. Dr. Gerhard Sextl gave the keynote address, with insightful and humourous tidbits about Prof. Schilling, Prof. Koren and Prof. Schechner. The researchers themselves then jointly presented their project to the audience comprising of members from the academia, government and industry.
Martin Reichel, CEO of the Bavarian Research Alliance and Dr. Manfred Gentz, Chairman of the German Association of the Friends of the Weizmann Institute closed off the proceedings with both emphasizing on the importance of collaboration between researchers.
